Harlow Running Club members ran off the festive excesses by competing in various races between Christmas and the New Year. At the very hilly and windy Buntingford Year End 10 Mile race first Harlow runner to finish was Marc Lowers in 77th place out of 473 finishers in a superb 1hr 10min 11sec. Not far behind was John Tennant 89th and 3rd Vet 60 in 1hr 11min 47sec, then Vince Hayward 183rd in 1hr 18min 22sec, Jamie Luck 206th in 1hr 20min 11sec, Graham Saville 234th in 1hr 21min 55sec and Odette Galea 382nd in 1hr 34min 17sec.

At the hilly Year End Stapelhurst 13.8K race near Maidstone in Kent Andy Kinney completed the course in 74th place out of 101 finishers in 1hr 13min 51sec.

Portsmouth Marathon - 23rd December

At the Portsmouth Marathon, run over a multi-terrain coastal course including sections of shingle and mud flats. Sean Flynn finished in 307th position out of 900 finishers in a commendable 3hrs 55min 03sec and Andy Kinney was 793rd in 5hrs 04min 02sec.

CROSS COUNTRY: Harlow Running Club (Race 2 of 4) - 16th December
 
Harlow Running Club competed in the second round of the East Herts and West Essex Cross Country League over a very muddy and very heavy going 5 mile course at Ware.
The mens race was won by Saffron Striders with 111 points, Ware Joggers (191) were second with Harlow (257) third and Bishop's Stortford (342) fourth. In the ladies race hosts Ware (52) were first with Bishops Stortford (94) second, Saffron Striders (97) third and Harlow (114) fourth.  Overall Saffron Striders were winners on the day followed by Ware, HRC and Bishops Stortford and after two races the league positions are Saffron Striders first, Ware second, HRC third and Bishops Stortford fourth.
First Harlow runner to finish was Jared Bethell in an excellent 2nd place out of 92 finishers, with Glen Paxman 10th and Rob Alston 3rd. HRC also had the first three Vet 60 ruuners to finish in John Tennant, Roy Steven and Pasqualle Pellechia. First Harlow lady was Julia Gardiner in a superb 4th place out of 51 finishers, with Dionne Jones 9th and 3rd Vet 35 and Paula Reynolds 13th.

XC: Bishops Stortford (Race 1 of 4) - 2nd December
 
Harlow Running Club competed in the first round of the East Herts and West Essex Cross Country League on Sunday on a very frosty 5 mile course at Bishop's Stortford. The league consists of teams from Harlow, Bishop's Stortford, Saffron Walden and Ware with the final league winners going on to compete in a national final. Harlow suffered from missing some of their top end runners, the mens team finished 3rd, the ladies 4th and combined were 4th. This first round was won by Ware with Saffron Walden second and Bishop's Stortford third. First Harlow runner to finish was Jared Bethell in an excellent 2nd place, out of 91 finishers, just a few seconds behind the winner. He was followed home by Glen Paxman 8th, Alan Broughton 13th, Rob Alston 17th, Paul Jeffrey-Read 18th, Steve Ambrose 22nd, Andy Terrell 30th, Marc Lowers 31st, Adrian Fell 35th, Wiliam Wall 36th, 16 year old Daniel Jephcott 41st in his first cross country race, John Tennant 46th, Roy Steven 47th, Jamie Berger 51st, Alan Cootes 61st, Chris Wagner 63rd, Rod Medden 69th, Graham Pugh 72nd, Graham Saville 75th, Martin McColgan 76th, Graham George 77th, Terry Pike 81st and Terry Heapy 82nd. First Harlow lady to finish was Julia Gardiner in a superb 4th place out of 47 finishers in what was her first cross country race. She was followed home by Sharon Wright 11th, Karen Moir 35th and Holly Nairn 40th.

HRC sent a small contingent to the Essex Cross Country Championships at a very hilly course at Woodford. First to finish was John Tennant in 38th position out of 92 finishers in 36min 17sec, Alan Harman was 57th in 39min 21sec and Martin McColgan 62nd in 40min 07sec.

CHAMPIONSHIP: Chemlsford 10 (Essex Championships) - 25th November

Harlow Running Club member Steve Murtagh put in another fantastic performance at the Chelmsford 10K race which also doubled as the Essex 10K Championships. Murtagh finished 13th out of 483 finishers and 2nd Vet 40 in a personal best time for the distance of 34min 10sec which earned him the Essex silver medal for his age group and also set a new HRC Vet 45 record. He was followed home by Jamie Jephcott 85th in 39min 50sec, Adrian Fell 122nd in 42min 26sec, Sean Flynn 137th in 43min 26sec (PB), Daniel Jephcott 146th in 43min 40sec and Andy Kinney 233rd in 48min 07sec. Jamie Jephcott and Andy Kinney performed especially well considering they both completed a full marathon on the previous weekend.

Luton Maraton - 18th November

Nearer to home at a hilly Luton Marathon Jamie Jephcott finished in 105th place out of 497 finishers in a superb 3hrs 24min 48sec. He was followed home by Joy Hale in her marathon debut in 445th place in 4hrs 42min 26sec.

The Solar Eclispe Marathon, Port Douglas, Australia - 14th November

Harlow Running Club member Andy Kinney completed the Solar Eclipse Marathon in Northern Queensland in Australia last week, so named because of the total solar eclipse that was visible at that location.
The race was held well within the tropics with the temperature in the 30's and humidity at over 80% which made for really difficult and testing running conditions, with hydration a constant problem. As a result Kinney struggled around the course mostly at jogging pace and often walking and finished in 224th place out of 243 finishers in a commendable 7hrs 25min 40sec.
The adventurous Kinney has now completed a marathon or half marathon in all seven continents.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Stebbing 10 - 11th November

HRC had a good turnout on Sunday at the Stebbing Remembrance Day 10 Mile Race run on a cool sunny morning providing excellent conditions for running and resulting in seven personal best times.
Steve Mackenzie finished in 30th place out of 455 finishers in a superb 1hr 07min 22sec in his first race back from injury. He was followed home by Jamie Jephcott 38th in 1hr 07min 57sec, Steve Ambrose 40th in 1hr 08min 16sec (PB) and Andy Terrell 49th in 1hr 09min 34sec. John Tennant finished in 56th place and 1st Vet 60 in 1hr 10min 25sec, an excellent result after running the previous days cross country.
First Harlow lady was Sharon Wright 179th in a commendable 1hr 21min 50sec. She was closely followed by Janice Page 185th in 1hr 22min 12sec (PB) and Georgina Spenceley 216th in 1hr 24min 14sec, a PB by an incredible 10mins.
There were also personal best times for the distance for Vince Hayward, Paul Schroder, Wendy Spring and Julia Galea.

At the Bupa Great South Run, a 10 mile race at Portsmouth where the women's race was won by British Olympian Jo Pavey, Nikki Martin finished in 11,430th position out of 25,000 entrants in 1hr 43min 09sec in her debut at the distance.

Tiptree 10 (British Masters Championships) - 28th October

Harlow Running Club member Steve Murtagh put in another fantastic performance at the Tiptree 10 Mile race which also doubled as the British Masters 10 Mile Championships. Murtagh finished in 7th position out of 476 finishers in a personal best time for the distance of 55min 54sec which is a new HRC Vet 45 record. Murtagh also finished 2nd Vet 45 in the British Masters Championships to claim the silver medal for his age category. Also running was John Tennant who finished in 90th position in 68min 47sec.

Harlow Running Club member Steve Murtagh continued his run of outstanding performances at the Wix 5 Mile race, near Colchester, which was also the Essex 5 Mile Championships. Murtagh finished in 7th place out of 303 finishers and 1st Vet 40, which won him the gold medal for his age group, in a fantastic 27min 14sec which was a personal best time for the distance and a new HRC Vet 45 record.

Harlow Running Club had a good turnout at the multi-terrain and very hilly Ware 10 Mile race with a total of 23 runners taking part. First home was John Tennant in 34th place out of 320 finishers and 1st Vet 60 in a superb 1hr 11min 46sec. He was closely followed by Dionne Jones in 36th place and 1st Vet 35 in an excellent 1hr 12min 05sec.Not far behind were Sean Flynn 41st in 1hr 13min 49sec, John Bull 43rd in 1hr 13min 57sec, Alan Cootes 56th in 1hr 15min 04sec and Jamie Luck 61st in 1hr 15min 39sec.

At the Manuden 10K near Bishop's Stortford Jamie Jephcott finished in 4th place in a superb 38min 14sec, just a week after completing the 57 mile London to Brighton race. He was followed home by son Daniel 21st in 42min 02sec, Vicky Steadman 29th in 43min 29sec, husband Jon 38th in 44min 33sec and Martin McColgan 81st in 49min 16sec.

At the Copped Hall 5 Mile race at Epping Julia Gardiner finished in 15th place out of 117 finishers and 1st lady in an excellent 38min 21sec. Harlow Running Club member Jared Bethell was triumphant in the Kielder Individual Duathlon (11K run, 27K cycle, 5K run) in Northumberland on Saturday finishing in 1st place in a fantastic 2hrs 08min 36sec.

London to Brighton Ultra (57 miles) - 30th September

Harlow Running Club member Jamie Jephcott completed the arduous London to Brighton Run in 80th position out of 196 starters in a fantastic 12hrs 53min. This classic race is 57 miles long, is mostly off road, is very hilly in places and some sections were very wet. To remain on ones feet for nearly 13 hours over this demanding course was a tremendous feat of endurance.

At the Saffron Walden 10K Multi-Terrain race Dionne Jones finished in 34th position out of 284 finishers and 3rd lady in a superb 43min 44sec. Andy Kinney completed the Oslo 10K in 1519th place out of 3734 finishers in 54min 52sec and then incredibly two hours later ran the Oslo Half Marathon finishing in 3134th position out of 6187 finishers in 1hr 52min 38sec.

Takeley 10K - 23rd September

At the Takeley 10K Pasquale Pellechia finished 26th out of 254 finishers and 1st Vet 60 in a superb 45min 00sec. He was followed by Vicky Steadman 31st and 3rd lady in 45min 14sec, Graham Pugh 55th in 47min 38sec and Linda Selby 180th in 58min 41.

CHAMPIONSHIP: Pleshey Half Marathon (Essex Championships) - 23rd September

Harlow Running Club members enjoyed a successful day at the Pleshey (near Chelmsford) Half Marathon which was also the Essex Half Marathon Championships. All seven runners each achieved either a club record, championship medal or a personal best time for the distance.
Pride of place goes to Steve Murtagh who finished 4th overall out of 332 finishers and 1st Vet 40 to earn him an Essex Gold medal for his age group in a fantastic 1hr 14min 30sec which was also a PB and a new HRC Vet 45 record. He was followed home by Jamie Jephcott 50th in 1hr 25min 05sec (PB), Steve Ambrose 72nd in 1hr 30min 37sec (PB) and Dionne Jones 93rd and 5th lady overall in a superb 1hr 33min 50  which is a PB and a new HRC Vet 40 record. John Tennant was 95th and 2nd Vet 60 to earn him an Essex silver medal in 1hr 34min 05sec, Janice Page 184th in 1hr 47min 06sec (PB) and Dave Page 206th in 1hr 50min 17sec (PB).

Harlow Running Club member Jamie Jephcott managed a personal best time for the distance at the very hilly Ingatestone 5 Mile race when finishing in 15th place in an excellent 30min 27sec. He was followed home by John  Tennant in 40th place and 2nd Vet 60 in 33min 39sec and Daniel Jephcott in 54th place and 1st Junior in a superb 35min 07sec which is a new HRC Junior (U 20) record.

Harlow Running Club member Andy Kinney completed the Cross Bay Challenge, which is a half marathon across Morecambe Bay, in 417th place out of 563 finishers in 2hrs 29min 17sec. Although the race is flat and run at low tide it still entails running in water up to mid thigh in places and this year was run with a severe head wind and in the rain.

HARLOW 10: Harlow 10 - 22nd July
 
Harlow Running Club staged the 24th running of the Harlow 10 Mile Road Race on a warm Sunday morning. The event was started by local ex paralympian gold medallist Noel Thatcher who then went on to join the other 277 runners in the race. The course started in London Road, opposite Mark Hall Sports Centre, went through Newhall, Church Langley, along Hastingwood Road, Threshers Bush, Foster Street, along Harlow Common, cross Potter Street onto the cycle track, through Ladyshot along Momples Road, then into Felmongers and finished on Mark Hall athletics track. The race was won by Mark Newton of Springfield Striders in a magnificent time of 55min 26sec. He was followed home by Paul Holley from Newmarket Joggers in 56min 34sec and 3rd over the line was HRC's own Dylan Mathews in 56min 50sec in his debut race for the club. First lady finisher was Alex Gounelas from Eton Manor in 12th place in a superb 1hr 01min 20sec. She was closely followed by June Allen from Springfield Striders in 13th place in 1hr 01min 31sec and 3rd was Jo Newens from the Road Runners Club 44th in 1hr 09min 44sec. Other Harlow runners were Paul Jeffrey-Read 30th in 1hr 07min 34sec, David Ayling 35th in 1hr 08min 42sec (PB), Mark Goodger 58th in 1hr 11min 32sec (PB), Peter Ayling 108th in 1hr 18min 55sec (PB), Noel Thatcher 117th in 1hr 19min 50sec and Vicky Lane 274th in 2hrs 04min 39sec.

MWL: Mob Match - 11th July

Harlow Running Club members competed in the Midweek League Road Race Mob Match, a race involving runners from both divisions of the league, over a hilly and very muddy multi-terrain 9K course in Trent Park in North London.
First to finish was Andy Terrell in 58th place out of 193 finishers in a superb 37min 57sec. He was followed home by John Tennant 77th and 1st Vet 60 in 39min 23sec, Sean Flynn 106th in 42min 00sec, Frank Heinen 118th in 43min 11sec, Terry Pike 161st in 48min 52sec and Terry Heapy 176th in 51min 16sec.
First Harlow lady to finish was Sharon Wright in 12th place out of 112 finishers in 40min 38sec. She was followed by Janice Page 42nd in 45min 43sec and Karen Moir 73rd in 51min 15sec. After the race there was a Midweek League presentation ceremony and despite HRC finishing in last place in their division they still managed to pick up two individual awards, Steve Murtagh and John Tennant were runners up in the Vet 40 and Vet 60 categories respectively.

Harlow Running Club member Steve Murtagh finished in 5th place out of 312 finishers and 1st Vet 40 at the Felsted 10k in a fantastic 35min 01sec, just 10seconds outside the HRC record for his age group. He was followed home by Andy Terrell 39th in 40min 43sec, John Tennant 60th and 1st Vet 60 in 42min 07sec and Paul McFarlane 71st in a personal best time for the distance of 43min 03sec. First Harlow lady was Dionne Jones in 84th place in a superb 44min 03sec. There were also personal best times for Janice Page and Clair Sullivan.

A small HRC contingent fared better at the High Ongar 10K race with four runners picking up 3 trophies. John Tennant led the way winning the Vet 60 trophy in a time of 43min 01sec, he was followed by Vicky Steadman 1st Vet 35 in 46min 10sec and Janice Page 1st Vet 45 in 50min 05sec. The only runner to miss out was Frank Heinen in 48min 13sec but then he had run a 5K race on the previous day!

Endure 24, Wasing Park, Reading (Solo Men)- 30th June

At the Endure 24 Hour event run over multiple laps of a hilly 5 mile course at Aldermaston near Reading Jamie Jephcott ran an incredible 21 laps or 105 miles to finish in 2nd place out of 41 finishers. Jamie completed this distance in a fantastic 21hrs 56min and was the first runner to do so when he decided his body had had enough, the eventual winner managed one more lap but needed a total of 24hrs 33min to do so.

MWL St Albans (Race 4 of 4) - 28th June

Harlow Running Club completed the final race in the Herts/Essex Midweek Road Race League Division 1 over a very hilly 7 mile course at St Albans. Harlow went into this fixture having already been relegated and with a depleted squad could not improve on their performances from previous rounds and finished in last place in the men's, ladies and overall races. So after a disappointing first year in the top division Harlow drop back into Division 2 but will look to bounce straight back again next year.
First Harlow runner to finish was Steve Murtagh in 6th place and 2nd Vet 40 in an excellent 40min 02sec. He was followed home by Jamie Jephcott 37th in 44min 15sec, Rob Lowe Low 40tgh in 44min 32sec and Andy Terrell 67th in 47min 20sec. John Tennant finished 78th and 2nd Vet 60 in 48min 34sec and Roy Steven was 97th and 3rd Vet 60 in 50min 14sec.

Harlow Running Club hosted the third round of the Herts/Essex Midweek Road Race League Division 1 over an undulating 10K course.
The ladies team fared best on the night finishing in 4th place out of six teams with the men finishing in a diappointing 6th place and overall HRC were 6th. First Harlow lady was Louise Brass in 10th place in a superb 43min 14sec. She was followed home by Sharon Wright 15th in a personal best time for the distance of 43min 43sec, Julia Gardiner 16th in 43min 51sec and Dionne Jones 18th in 44min 50sec.

LADIES 5K: Harlow Ladies 5K Series (Race 3 of 3) - June

Harlow Running Club staged the last of three Ladies 5K Series of midweek races run on a hilly course through the town park. The winner of this race was Helen Grant of Cambridge & Coleridge AC in 20min 29sec and she was followed home by Rebecca White of Saffron Walden Striders in 20min 59sec.
In 3rd place was Harlow's Julia Gardiner who finished in a personal best time for the distance of 21min 04sec which is also a new HRC ladies senior record. There were also personal best times for Janice Page, Linda Hawkins, Zoe Bishop, Paula Green, Julia Galea, Caroline Johnson and Daniella Tristrim.
The overall series winner in the senior category was Julia Gardiner, the Vet 40 winner was Dionne Jones and HRC won the team prize.

Harlow Running Club had an excellent turnout at the Hatfield Broad Oak 10K race on Bank Holiday Monday.
Steve Murtagh was once again first Harlow runner to finish, in 8th place out of 1106 finishers and 2nd Vet 40 in a fantastic 35min 04sec. He was followed home by ex Paralympian gold medallist Noel Thatcher 17th in 35min 51sec and Jamie Jephcott 39th in a personal best time for the distance of 38min 20sec.
First Harlow lady was Dionne Jones in 149th place in a superb 42min 52sec and she was followed by Sharon Wright 193rd in a PB time of 44min 06sec and Claire Russell 338th in 47min 28sec.

MWL: Stations Midweek League Division 1 (Race 2 - Welwyn) - 31st May

Harlow Running Club took part in the second round of the Herts / Essex Mid Week Road Race League Division 1 last week run over a 10K course at Welwyn Garden City. It was another disappointing result for Harlow, who were up against some far stronger clubs, finishing in 6th place in both men and ladies races and overall.
In the men's race Steve Murtagh finished in 9th place out of 262 finishers and 3rd Vet 40 in an excellent 35min 06sec and he was followed home by Rob Lowe 35th in 38min 03sec and Glenn Paxman 39th in 38min 25sec. Roy Steven finished in 90th place and 2nd Vet 60 in 41min 26sec and John Tennant was 120th and 3rd Vet 60 in 43min 18sec.

At a very hilly Great Eastern 5 Mile race held on a very hot Sundaymorning Alan Broughton was first HRC member to finish in 7th place out of 116 finishers in a superb 32min 34sec. He was followed home by three senior members, Roy Steven 16th and 1st Vet 60 in 34min 43sec, John Tennant 17th and 2nd Vet 60 in 35min 09sec and Pasquale Pellecchia 29th and 3rd Vet 60 in 36min 36sec. LADIES 5K:Race 2 of 3 - 22nd May

Harlow Running Club hosted the second in a series of three Ladies 5K races last week. Winner of this race, and also the first race, was Fiona Tideswell of Saffron Walden Striders in an excellent 19min 59sec. She was followed home by unaffiliated Katherine Foy in 20min 37sec and then a trio of HRC members, Louise Brass just back from injury in a superb 21min 07sec, Julia Gardiner in 21min 14sec and Sharon Wright in a personal best time for the distance in 21min 17sec.
There were also personal best times for Georgina Spenceley, Zoe Bishop, Annette Harman, Shiela Baxter, Carolyn Johnson and Mandi Henderson.

At the Great Baddow 10 Mile Essex Championships in Chelmsford first Harlow runner was Jamie Jephcott in 54th place out of 670 finishers in an excellent 1hr 5min 10sec. He was followed home by John Tennant 135th and 2nd Vet 60 to earn the Essex Championships silver medal in 1hr 12min 16sec. Andy Kinney was 236th in a PB time of 1hr 17min 56sec and Andy Bradley was 270th in 1hr 19min 19sec.

MWL: Race 1 of 4 - Fairlands Valley Midweek League 10k, 15th May

Harlow Running Club made a not unexpected less than ideal start to the Herts/Essex Midweek Road Race League Division 1 in the first race held over a 10K course at Stevenage. Having been promoted  from division 2 last year Harlow were up against some top runners from Stevenage, St Albans, Welwyn Garden City, Barnet and Trent Park running clubs.
Harlow finished the first race in 6th and last place in both the mens and ladies races and therefore also 6th overall. In the mens race Steve Murtagh finished in 11th place out of 234 runners and 3rd Vet 40 in an excellent 35min 07sec and he was followed home by Rob Lowe 33rd in 37min 18sec, Jamie Jephcott 57th in 39min 12sec and Steve Mackenzie 63rd in 39min 45sec. Roy Steven was 81st and 3rd Vet 60 in 41min 01sec and there were personal best times for the distance for Sean Flynn, Paul MaFarlane and Paul Schroder.
In the ladies race Julia Gardiner was 14th out of 115 runners in a superb 43min 12sec and she was followed by Vicky Steadman 25th in a PB time of 44min 17sec, Paula Reynolds 26th in 44min 25sec and Dionne Reynolds 31st in 46min 05sec. There were also personal best times for Georgina Spenceley and Clare Sullivan.

Halstead Marathon (Essex Championship), 13th May

At the Halstead and Essex Championships Marathon Jared Bethell completed a fantastic third marathon in four weeks for 5th place out 610 finishers in a superb 2hrs 56min 40sec. Because Bethell was the 3rd Essex qualified runner to finish he received the Essex Championships bronze medal. He was followed home by Jamie Jephcott 75th in 3hrs 26min 35sec and Steve Ambrose 139th in 3hrs 41min 44sec. They were followed by marathon debutantes Pete Brewin 172nd in 3hrs 47min 07sec, Vince Hayward 220th in 3hrs 53min 42sec and Sharon Wright 273rd in 4hrs 01min 30sec. Finishing in the same time was Janice Page in 274th place which improved her PB time by an incredible 28 minutes and also earned her the Essex silver medal for 2nd female Vet45.
Enthusiastic runners David and Katie Ayling finished in 362nd and 363rd place respectfully in 4hrs 19min 47sec, on the day after they were married! Finally Matt Jones finished in 382nd place in 4hrs 23min 00sec.

Harlow Running Club held its first of three Ladies 5K Series of races last week on a hilly course through the town park.
The winner of this first race was Fiona Tideswell from Saffron Walden Striders in 19min 53sec. She was followed home by Kathryn Chapman from Bishop's Stortford Running Club in 20min 16sec and 1st Harlow Running Club member Julia Gardinar in 21min 37sec on her debut at the distance.
Other Harlow runners to distinguish themselves were Joanne Mills in 20th place and 1st Vet60 in 27min 25sec and Pauline Galoppi who achieved a personal best time for the distance of 30min 43sec.

Milton Keynes Marathon, 29th April

 

Harlow Running Club member Jared Bethell completed his second marathonin a week. Seven days after completing the Virgin London Marathon Bethell finished the first Milton Keynes Marathon, run in very wetconditions, in 118th place out of 3000 finishers in a fantastic 3hrs 14min 26sec. He was closely followed home by Paul Jeffrey-Read 190th in a personal best time for the distance, by 12 minutes, of 3hrs 21min 14sec. Sean Flynn 574th was just 4 minutes outside his PB in 3hrs 45min 18sec.

Virgin London Marathon, 22nd April
 
Harlow Running Club had a good turnout at the Virgin London Marathon with 26 runners finishing the race and with several personal best times for the distance being achieved and one club record. There were also several runners making their debut at the 26.2 mile distance.
First home was Steve Murtagh in 191st place out of 36,672 finishers in a fantastic PB time of 2hrs 40min 58sec to break his own HRC Vet45 record. He was followed home by Jared Bethell 616th in 2hrs 52min 16sec, ex paralympian Noel Thatcher MBE 3873rd in 3hrs 25min 54sec and Andy Terrell 4406th in 3hrs 29min 05sec (PB).
First Harlow lady was Dionne Jones in 6412th place in a superb 3hrs 40min 47sec. There were also personal best times for David Page by 9 minutes, Susan Dewen by 11 minutes, Alison Bull by 10 minutes and Pauline Galoppi by 15 minutes.

Marathon des Sables in Morocco, (151 miles, 6 stages, 6 days) 8th – 14th April
 
Harlow Running Club member Andy Kinney completed one of the toughest foot races on Earth. The Marathon des Sables covers 151 miles, equivalent to 5 1/2 regular marathons,  run over 6 stages in 6 days in the Sahara Desert in Morocco. In addition competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint. Most of the going is on uneven rocky or stony ground with about 20 percent of the distance on sand dunes and mid day temperatures reach 120F. Kinney finished in 450th position out of 871 finishers in a fantastic 46hrs 19min 46sec.

Harlow Running Club member Jamie Jephcott was first Harlow runner home in the Great Bentley, near Colchester, Half Marathon and finished in 37th position out of 356 finishers in a superb 1hr 26min 20sec. He was followed home by Mark Goodger in 53rd place in a personal best time
for the distance of 1hr 28min 48sec. John Tennant was 81st and 2nd Vet 60 in 1hr 31min 53sec, David Croly 143rd in 1hr 38min 50sec, Sharon Wright 152nd in 1hr 40min 44sec, Vince Hayward in his debut at the distance 153rd in 1hr 40min 47sec, Matt Jones 223rd in 1hr 50min 33sec

At the Adidas Silverstone Half Marathon, run on the famous and historic motor racing circuit, Harlow Running Club member Georgina Spenceley in her debut at the distance finished 1385th out of over 6390 finishers in a superb 1hr 49min 34sec. She was followed home by Wendy Spring 3520th in 2hr 08min 51sec, Susan Dewen 3929th in 2hr 13min 16sec, Paulene Galoppi (debut) 4649th in 2hr 22min 28sec and Paul Schroder (debut) 3507th in 2hr 08min 43sec.

Essex 20 (Essex Championship) - 4th March

Several Harlow Running Club members took part in the Essex 20 Mile Road Race Championships as part of their Spring Marathon training schedule. The race was held on a cold and wet Sunday morning at Langham, near Colchester, over a challenging three lap course which contained two major climbs. First Harlow runner to finish was Steve Murtagh in 8th place out of 403 finishers and 3rd Vet 40, to earn him the Essex bronze medal for his age group, in a fantastic time of 2hrs 00min 05sec just 30 secs outside his own HRC record. He was followed home by Jamie Jephcott 63rd in 2hrs 21min 01sec, Steve Ambrose 98th in a personal best time for the distance of 2hrs 29min 54sec and Andy Bradley in his debut at the distance in 2hrs 34min 48sec. First Harlow lady was Dionne Jones in 128th place in a superb 2hrs 35min 36sec.

Race Your Pace Half Marathon (Dorney Lake, Windsor) - 19th February

Harlow Running Club member Steve Murtagh finished an impressive 6th place overall, out of 1084 finishers, and 1st Vet 40 in the Race Your Pace Half Marathon held at Dorney Lake near Windsor. The race consisted of 4 laps of the lake used by Eton rowing club. Murtagh's time was a superb 1hr 17min 46sec which was just 15sec outside of his own HRC Vet 45 record. Also running was Milly Lang-Watts in 1075th place in 2hr 45min 35sec.

London Ultra 50K - 19th February

At the London Ultra 50K (30 miles) run from the City of London Playing Fields at Grove Park, along the Capital Ring route and ending at the Perivale Athletics track Jamie Jephcott finished in 29th place out of 188 finishers in an excellent 4hr 55min 14sec.

XCOUNTRY: East Herts & West Essex Race 4 of 4 (Bishops Stortford) - 12th February

Harlow Running Club competed in the fourth and final round of the East Herts and West Essex Cross Country League over a slippery snow covered 5 mile course at Bishop's Stortford. Before this race Harlow were in second place on 9 points, just one point behind leaders Saffron Striders, Ware Joggers were on 8 points and last place Bishop's Stortford on 3 points. With 4 points being awarded to the winning team Harlow were looking to overhaul the leaders and take top spot. Alas, it was not to be as Harlow were missing too many top performers on the day.
Harlow got off to a great start in the men's race with Jared Bethell finishing in an excellent first place. He was followed home by the fast improving Rob Lowe 8th, Steve Mackenzie 16th and Paul Jeffrey-Read 17th. In the ladies race Sharon Wright finished in 10th place with Vicky Steadman 14th, Zoe Delaney 16th, Odette Galea 29th and Karen Moir 40th. On the day this resulting in the men's team finishing in 3rd place, the ladies team 4th and overall a disappointing last place to gain just 1 point.
This meant that the final overall table finished with Saffron Striders in 1st place with 14 points, Ware Joggers 11 points, Harlow 10 points and Bishop's Stortford in last place on 4 points.

Pilgram Challenge North Downs Way Multistage Ultra - 12th February

At the very hilly Pilgram Challenge North Downs Way Multistage Ultra Andy Kinney completed the 2 day 66 mile course in a fantastic 17hrs 49min 43sec (first day 8hrs 15min 08sec second day 9hrs 34min 35sec).
The course runs along the North Downs National Trail, the oldest trade route in England and route used by Pilgrims for Winchester, Canterbury, Dover & the Continent. The route follows the North Downs Way from the Surrey towns of Farnham through to Merstham and includes three climbs on each day of over 400ft!

Thames Trot 50 mile Ultra - 4th February

Intrepid Harlow Running Club members Steve Ambrose and David Ayling completed the arduous Thames Trot Ultra 50 mile race, using the banks and towpaths of England's largest river from Oxford to Henley. Both runners crossed the finish line together in 54th place out of 223 finishers in a fantastic 7hrs 56min 57sec.

At the Gunpowder Parkrun 5K race at Walham Abbey Paul Jeffrey-Read finished in an excellent 2nd place in a personal best time for the distance in 19min 04sec and Marc Lowers was 6th in 20min 54sec, also a PB.

At the Waltham Abbey Parkrun 5K Paul Jeffrey-Read, in his debut at the distance, finished in an excellent 1st place in a time of 19min 36sec.

Folksworth 15 - 22nd January

Harlow Running Club members endured a very windy but very productive run at the Folksworth 15 Mile road race in Cambridgeshire on Sunday. All six runners either improved a HRC record or their personal best time for the distance. Steve Murtagh, in his debut at the distance, finished 7th overall out of 440 finishers and 1st Vet 45 in a fantastic 1hr 29min 03sec which was also a new HRC Vet 45 record by 5mins which was set 15 years ago in 1997. He was followed home by John Tennant in 102nd place and 1st Vet 60 in 1hr 48min 56sec which improved the HRC Vet 60 record by over 8min. Not far behind was John Bull 113th in 1hr 49min 57sec a PB by 2min, Graham Saville 245th in 2hr 06min 26sec a PB by 6min, Susan Dewen 398th in 2hr 30min 45sec a PB by over 30mins and Alison Bull 399th in 2hr 31min 20sec a PB by over 20min.

At the Fred Hughes 10 Mile road race in St Albans Vince Hayward finished in 208th position out of 700 finishers in a superb personal best time for the distance of 1hr 15min 52sec. He was followed home by David Page 396th in 1hr 24min 37sec and Janice Page 414th in 1hr 25min 19sec.

Santa Pola Half Marathon, Spain - 22nd January

At the Santa Pola Half Marathon in Spain Dionne Jones finished in 1508th position out of 7500 finishers in a fantastic 1hr 34min 48sec which was a personal best time for the distance and improved her own HRC Vet40 record by 2min. She was followed home by Vicky Steadman 2807th in 1hr 42min 24sec, her best time at the distance since becoming a mum.

XCOUNTRY: Harlow Running Club (Race 3 of 4) - 15th January

Harlow Running Club hosted the penultimate round of the East Herts and West Essex Cross Country League on a cold and frosty Sunday morning over a five mile course on the fields and woods between Newhall and Church Langley. Despite the conditions HRC put in a magnificent performance to finish 1st team overall with the men's team finishing in an excellent 1st place and the ladies team 3rd. With one race to go HRC are in 2nd place overall with the men's team also 2nd and the ladies in 3rd place. First home for Harlow was Jared Bethell in an excellent 2nd place closely followed by Mark Harris in 3rd place and not far behind were Rob Lowe 9th and Richard Mead 11th. First Harlow lady was Paula Reynolds in a superb 3rd place with Sharon Wright 9th, Dionne Jones 10th and Vicky Steadman 12th.

The course was just under 4 and a half miles long with the weather being very kind as there are 2 becks to run through, so this year they were only ankle deep. First home for Harlow was Steve Murtagh in 2nd place over all, he was closely followed home by Jared Bethell and Mark Harris in 3rd and 4th places respectively. In the womens race first home was Paula Reynolds in 6th place, followed home by Sharon Wright in 10th and Vicky Steadman in 12th. With 169 finishers in total.
