Buntingford 10 - 26th December
A group of Harlow Running Club members ran off the festive excesses by completing the Buntingford Year End 10 Mile road race two days after Christmas.
First to finish was Paul Jeffrey-Read in 33rd place out of 425 finishers in an excellent personal best time for the distance of 1hr 05min 27sec. He was followed home by John Tennant in 72nd place in 1hr 09min 31sec which won him the Vet 60 trophy. Sean Flynn was 103rd in 1hr 13min 17 (PB), Vince Hayward 138th in his debut at the distance in 1hr 16min 08sec, Jamie Luck 211th in 1hr 21min 57sec, David Page 254th in 1hr 24min 18sec, followed by wife Janice 269th in 1hr 26min 18sec, Joanne Mills 343rd in her debut at the distance in 1hr 33min 08sec and Linda Hawkins 374th in 1hr 37min 48sec.

MET LEAGUE: Ruislip (Race 3) - 17th December
Harlow Running Club member John Tennant completed the 3rd race in the Metropolitan Cross Country League held over a muddy 5 mile course at Ruislip and finished in 252nd place out of 365 finishers and 1st Vet 60 in a superb 36min 42sec. He was followed home by Graham Pugh in 309th place in 39min 46sec.

XCOUNTRY: Ware Joggers (Race 1 of 4) - 4th December
Sunday saw the first round of the East Herts and West Essex Cross Country League, held on a 5 mile farm land course at Ware, involving teams from Harlow, Bishop's Stortford, Saffron Walden and Ware. Harlow Running Club had a good turnout with 35 runners competing but were hampered by missing their top two male and top female runners due to injuries.
The ladies race was won by Bishop's Stortford RC with Saffron Striders 2nd, Harlow RC 3rd and Ware Joggers 4th. The men's race was won by Saffron Striders with Ware Joggers 2nd, Harlow RC 3rd and Bishop's Stortford RC 4th. The overall positions were Saffron Striders 1st, Ware Joggers 2nd, Harlow RC 3rd and Bishop's Stordford RC 4th.
First Harlow runner to finish was Glen Paxman in 9th place with Rob Lowe just behind in 10th place followed by a trio of runners with Jamie Jephcott in 14th place, Alan Broughton 15th and Andy Levett 16th. First Harlow lady was Paula Reynolds in 5th place closely followed by Sharon Wright 7th, Dionne Jones 12th and Zoe Delaney 17th in her first XC race.

CHAMPIONSHIP: Stebbing 10 - 13th November
Harlow Running Club members enjoyed good running conditions at the Stebbing 10 Mile road race on Remembrance Sunday which resulted in several personal best times for the distance and three trophy winners. First home for Harlow was Jared Bethell who took the 3rd place trophy out of 408 finishers in an excellent 58min 38sec. He was followed home by Jamie Jephcott 27th in 1hr 04min 48sec which won him the Grand Prix Series Vet 40 trophy for best overall aggregate times in the Tilty 5 mile, Felsted 10K and Stebbing 10 mile races. He was closely followed by Steve McKenzie 28th in 1hr 04min 53sec and Roy Steven finished 39th to win the Vet 60 trophy in 1hr 06min 57sec.
First Harlow lady was Dionne Jones in 98th place in a superb 1hr 13min 06sec with Claire Russell not far behind in 151st place in 1hr 18min 26sec. There were also personal best times for Paul Jeffrey-Read 33rd 1.05.33, Andy Terrell 48th 1.07.41, Vince Hayward 134th 1.16.48 and Peter Ayling 200th 1.22.37.

At the San Francisco Half Marathon Vicky Steadman finished in a creditable 340th place out of 3500 finishers in 1hr 47min 10sec.

Stevenage Half Marathon - 6th November
At the Stevenage Half Marathon first Harlow runner was John Tennant in 86th place out of 668 finishers in 1hr 35min 07sec and he was closely followed home by David Ayling 109th in 1.36.48 and Sean Flynn 158th in 1.39.44 (PB). First Harlow lady was Sharon Wright in 169th place in a superb 1.40.27 to beat her PB by almost two minutes. She was followed home by Janice Page 313th in 1.50.33 also a PB by almost two minutes. Husband David Page was not far behind in 343rd place in 1.52.55, Clair Sullivan was 521st in 2.05.39 (PB) and Linda Hawkins 564th in 2.10.35.

Billaricay 10K - 6th November
At the Billericay 10K race Steve Murtagh finished in 3rd place out of 655 finishers and 1st Vet 40 in a fantastic 34min 59sec which was just 8 seconds outside his own HRC record for his age group. Dionne Jones performed even better by improving the HRC Vet 40 record, which has stood since 1992, by over a minute to finish in 88th place and 3rd Vet Lady in a superb 42min 35sec which was also a PB. John Bull finished in 93rd place in 42min 44sec just half a minute outside his PB time.

Harlow Running Club were represented at the Bupa Great South Run 10 Mile Race at Portsmouth where Jamie Jephcott was first Harlow runner to finish in 175th place out of 24,000 finishers in an excellent 1hr 04min 12sec. He was followed home by Steve Ambrose in 444th place in 1.09.27 which was a personal best time for the distance and Dione Jones in 893rd place in 1.13.31 also a PB. Mark Goodger, in his debut at the distance, finished 929th in 1.13.41, Matt Jones 1953rd in 1.18.56, Janice Page 3305th in 1.23.48 (PB), David Page 3355th in 1.23.57 and Michelle Jephcott in her first race for the club 12,005th in 1.48.38.

At the Tiptree 10 Mile Essex Championships Steve Murtagh continued his fantastic run of recent form with a 9th place out of 559 finishers and Essex Vet 40 Gold Medal winner in an excellent 57min 51sec. Roy Steven finished 66th and 1st Vet 60 in 1hr 06min 04sec and only missed out on the Essex Vet 60 Gold Medal because he was a late entry, that honour went to John Tennant 88th in 1hr 09min 46sec.

Fairlands Valley 5K Series (Race 3 of 3)- 1st September
Harlow Running Club member Steve Murtagh continued his recent good form when he finished 7th, out of 170 finishers, and 1st Vet 40 in the third and final race in the Stevenage Midweek 5K Series in a fantastic 16min 59sec, which was also a personal best time for the distance and improved his own HRC Vet 45 record. Jamie Jephcott finished in 26th place in 18.31, Adrian Fell 33rd in 18.50 (PB), Richard Solomons 49th and 1st Vet 60 in 19.49, John Tennant 52nd in 19.57, Sean Flynn 82nd in 21.34 and Sharon Wright 85th in 21.45. Steve Murtagh also won the series Vet 40 trophy and John Tennant the Vet 60 trophy.

Four Harlow Running Club members competed in the second of three Stevenage 5K series of races. First to finish was Steve Murtagh in 12th place out of 163 finishers and 1st Vet 40 in a fantastic 17min 05secs which is a new HRC Vet 45 record, the old record having stood since 1999. He was followed home by Jamie Jephcott 43rd in 18.55, Adrian Fell 46th in a personal best time for the distance of 19.22 and John Tennant 57th and 1st Vet 60 in 19.58.

Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1 Trail Ultra (30 miles) - 14th August
Two Harlow Running Club members completed the Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1 Trail Ultra Marathon, a hilly 50K (30 miles) race run over the Salisbury Wessex area countryside. David Ayling finished in 45th place in a fantastic 4hrs 51min 10sec and not far behind was Steve Ambrose in 53rd place in a superb 4hrs 58min 34sec.

Three Harlow Running Club members competed in the first of a series of three Stevenage 5K races with some excellent performances. First Harlow runner to finish was Steve Murtagh in superb 10th place, out of 159 finishers, and 1st Vet 40 in a time of 17min 16sec which equaled HRC Vet 45 record. He was followed home by Jamie Jephcott 24th in 18.15, just one second outside his personal best time for the distance, and John Tennant 54th and 2nd Vet 60 in 20.23.

Harlow 10 - 31st July
Harlow Running Club staged the 22nd running of the Harlow 10 Mile Road Race on a warm Sunday morning. The winner of the race was James Conner from Kent AC in a fantastic 51min 52sec, more than three and a half minutes in front of the second place Mark Newton from Springfield Striders in 56.31. Third place went to Andrew Mynott from Saffron Walden Striders in 57.36. First lady was Natasha Pitman from North Herts Road Runners in 45th place in a superb 67min 40sec. She was followed by Fiona Halls from Safron Walden Striders 59th in 68.48 and Nikki Brockbank from Springfield Striders 62nd in 69.08.
First Harlow runner to finish was Jared Bethell in an excellent 5th place in 60min 31sec. He was followed home by Rob Lowe 20th in 63.52 and Andy Terrell 58th in 68.46. First Harlow lady was Sharon Wright in 119th place in 76min 50sec and Katie Herrington was 186th in 82.58.

Harlow Running Club fielded a team at the Stevenage Relays over a 3K course around Fairlands Valley Lake. First off in the five man team was Rob Lowe who was the quickest Harlow runner in 53rd position out of 440 finishers in 10min 14sec. He passed on to John Tennant in 177th place and 11min 57sec, next was Martin McColgan in 207th place and 12min 38sec, then Colin Moody in 253rd place and 13min 58sec and finally Jamie Jephcott in 97th place and 10min 53sec. Harlow were 36th team out of 57 and 12th veteran team out of 21.

CHAMPIONSHIP: Brentwood 10K (Essex Championships) - 17th July
At the Brentwood 10K, which was also the Essex 10K Championships, first Harlow runner to finish was Steve Murtagh in a magnificent 8th place out of 428 finishers in 35min 31 which won him the Essex Championship gold medal for the Vet 40 category. He was followed home by Rob Lowe 48th 38.30, Jamie Jephcott 65th 39.51 and Richard Solomons 102nd 42.50. John Tennant finished in 107th place in 43.12 which earned him the bronze medal in the Essex Championships Vet 60 category.

Harlow Running Club members competed in the Midweek League Road Race Mob Match, a race involving runners from both divisions of the league, over a hilly 9K course in Trent Park in North London.

MIDWEEK LEAGUE: Welwyn (Race 4 of 4) - 29th June
Harlow Running Club contested the last round of the Herts/Essex Midweek Road Race League Division 2 held over a 5 mile course at Welwyn Garden City. Harlow went into this fixture lying in overall 3rd place, just one point away from 2nd place, with the top two teams gaining promotion. An all out effort was therefore required with everyone needing to perform to their hightest level and this they emphatically did with 10 personal best times achieved and 2 new HRC records.
On the day the Ladies team finished 1st, the Mens team finished 3rd and overall Harlow finished 2nd. The final positions were the Ladies team were 2nd and their Vets team also 2nd, the Mens team finished 4th with their Vets team 1st and overall Harlow finished in 2nd place and promotion to the first division for the first time in their history.
First Harlow runner to finish was Steve Murtagh in 3rd place and 1st Vet 40 in a fantastic 27min 49sec which is personal best time for the distance and a new HRC Vet 45 record. He was followed home by Rob Lowe 11th 29.44 (PB), Jamie Jephcott 21st 30.47 and Jason Haigh 25th 31.19. Roy Steven finished 35th and 1st Vet 50 in 31.46, John Tennant 47th and 1st Vet 60 in 32.40 and Richard Solomon 50th and 2nd Vet 60 in 33.01.

Harlow Running Club hosted the third round of the Herts/Essex Midweek Road Race League Division 2 over an undulating 10K course. The ladies team fared best on the night finishing 2nd with the men finishing 4th and Harlow 3rd team overall, after three rounds this is also how the teams stand in the league.
First Harlow runner to finish on the night was Steve Murtagh in a superb 3rd place and 1st Vet 40 in 35min 27sec, which was also a personal best time for the distance, and broke the HRC Vet 45 record that has stood for 15 years. He was followed home by Rob Lowe in 13th place in 38.04, which was also a PB, and Jamie Jephcott in 23rd place in 39.06. Richard Solomons in 55th place was 1st Vet 60 in 42.04 with John Tennant close behind in 56th place and 2nd Vet 60 in 42.21.
First Harlow lady was Louise Brass in a fantastic 2nd place in 40.09 (PB) and she was followed home by Paula Reynolds in 7th place in 44.02 (PB) and Sharon Wright in 9th place in 44.32.

Ladies 5K: Race 3 - 7th June
Harlow Running Club staged the last of three Ladies 5K Series of midweek races run on a hilly course through the town park. The winner of this race was Harlow's own Louise Brass in a fantastic personal best time for the distance of 19min 44sec. She was closely followed home by Fiona Halls in 19.57 and Janet Lipsilk in 20.31, both from Saffron Walden Striders. Louise Brass combined with Sharon Wright in 6th place in 21.46 and Paula Reynolds in 7th place in 21.48 (PB) to win the team prize for Harlow. There were also personal best times for Susanne Waterfield and Amy Moir. The overall series winner was Louise Brass, Dionne Jones was the Vet 40 winner and Harlow were the team winners.

With both the mens and ladies teams missing a couple of their top end runners the results were not as good as could be expected. The mens team finished 4th and the ladies 3rd and overall Harlow were 4th team. After two rounds Harlow drop to 2nd place overall but the mens vet team maintain their 1st place. First Harlow runner to finish was Steve Murtagh in 5th place and 1st Vet 40 in a superb 40min 21sec. He was closely followed home by Jared Bethell in 40.48 and Rob Lowe in 43.41. First Harlow lady to finish was Paula Reynolds in 6th place in an excellent 50mins 15sec. She was followed home by Sharon Wright in 7th place in 50.59 and Dionne Jones in 11th place in 52.55.

Harlow Running Club staged the second of three Ladies 5K Series of races run on an undulating course in the town park. The winner of this race was Kathryn Chapman of Bishop's Stortford Running Club in 19min 54sec. She was closely followed home by Fiona Tideswell in 19.57 and Fiona Halle in 20.03 both from Saffron Walden Striders. First Harlow runner to finish was Dionne Jones in 8th place in 21.24 and she was followed home by Sharon Wright in 9th place in a personal best time for the distance of 21.32 and Claire Russell in 10th place and also a PB in 21.56. There were also personal best times for Catherine Jones, Linda Hawkins, Wendy Bradford, Dirkie Swifen, Kim Shenton, Karen Anthony, Susanne Waterfield and Amy Moir.

Harlow Running Club made the best possible start to the Herts/Essex Midweek Road League Div 2 by winning the first race held over a 10K course at Royston. As well as the overall winning team Harlow Ladies won their race and were third vet team and Harlow men came second in their race and were first vet team. This result was achieved by an excellent total turnout of 48 runners. First Harlow runner to finish was Steve Murtagh in 6th place and 2nd Vet 40 in a superb 36min 01sec. He was followed home by Jared Bethell in 9th place in 37min 17sec and Rob Lowe in 13th place in 38min 37sec. John Tennant finished in 44th place and 1st Vet 60 in 41min 19sec. There were also personal best times for the distance for Dan Chapman, Terry Ridge, Dougie Gray, Stuart Glynn and Peter Ayling. First Harlow lady to finish was Louise Brass in a fantastic 2nd place in 40min 12sec. She was followed home by Sharon Wright in 8th place and a personal best time of 44min 28sec and Paula Reynolds in 9th place in 44min 50sec. Linda Selby finished in 48th place and 2nd Vet 55 in 56min 03sec and there was a personal best time for Clare Williams.

LADIES 5K: Race 1 of 3 - 10th May
Harlow Running Club held its first of three Ladies 5K Series of races last week on a hilly course through the town park. The winner of this first race was Harlow Running Club's own Louise Brass who finished in a superb 19min 51sec. She was followed home by Fiona Tideswell from Saffron Walden Striders in 20min 17sec and Helen Grant from Cambridge AC in 20min 56sec. First junior runner was Isobel Moss from Woodford Green in 6th place in 21min 48sec and Dionne Jones from HRC was first Vet 40 in 8th place in 22min 07sec. Louise Brass, Sharon Wright in 5th place in 21min 43 sec and Paula Reynolds in 7th place in 22min 01sec combined to win the team prize for Harlow Running Club. There were also personal best times for the distance for Harlow runners Claire Williams and Wendy Bradford.

Steve Ambrose and Dave Ayling who took part in the Malvern Hills Ultra in Worcestershire which is a 53 mile run that includes a total ascent of over 4,000ft. Both runners completed the gruelling course in a fantastic 12hrs 23min, 6 hours of which was run in driving rain!

Virgin London Marathon - 17th April
Harlow Running Club fielded 29 runners in the Virgin London Marathon on a day of unseasonable high temperatures that were far from ideal for marathon running. Even so there were five personal best times for the distance and everyone can be proud of their performance on such a challenging day. First Harlow runner to finish was Steve Murtagh in 205th place out out 34,656 finishers in a fantastic 2hrs 42min 20sec. This was a personal best time for the distance and also broke the HRC Vet45 record which has stood since 1997. He was followed home by Jared Bethell in 583rd place in 2hrs 52min 54sec and Jamie Jephcott in 2306th place in 3hrs 15min 26sec which was a personal best time for the distance. First Harlow lady was Louise Brass in 2944th place in an excellent 3hrs 22min 01sec and coming just 7 months after giving birth. She was followed home by Clare Williams in her debut at the distance in 6897th place in a superb 3hrs 49min 17sec and Vicky Steadman, another recent mum, in 7787th place in 3hrs 53min 49sec. There were also personal best times for Steve Ambrose, Janice Page and Anne Kleijwegt.

Harlow Running Club members were out in force at the St Clare 10K race, in support of the Hospice, at Hastingwood just outside Harlow. First Harlow runner to finish was Jared Bethell in 7th place out of 482 finishers in a superb 36min dead. He was followed home by Jamie Jephcott in 25th place in a personal best time for the distance of 38min 47sec and Steve Mackenzie in 30th place in 39min 59sec.
First Harlow lady was Sonia Davis in 165th place in a personal best time for the distance of 50min 27sec and she was followed home Anne Kleijwegt in 190th place in 51min 40sec and Katie Herrington in 192nd place in 51min 41sec.

CHAMPIONSHIP: Essex 20, Great Bromley (Essex Championship) - 6th March
The Essex 20 mile race held at Great Bromley (Nr Colchester) which incorporated the Essex Championships was a good warm up race for those running next months Virgin London Marathon. First Harlow runner to finish was Steve Murtagh, in his debut at the distance, in a fantastic 8th place out of 378 finishers in a time of 1hr 59min 37sec which earned him an Essex Vet 40 silver medal and also beat the HRC Vet 45 record which had stood since 1997. Not far behind, also in his debut at the distance, was Jared Bethell in 10th place in a superb 2hrs 00min 33sec. Third Harlow runner was Jamie Jephcott in 2hrs 20min 32sec which improved his personal best time for the distance by over 5 minutes. John Tennant finished in 2hrs 32min 41sec to win the Essex Vet 60 silver medal and missed out on the HRC Vet 60 record by just 2 seconds! Colin Moody was not far behind in 2hrs 33min 02sec to win the Essex Vet 60 bronze medal. First Harlow lady was Louise Brass in a superb 2hrs 28min 13sec and she was followed home by Vicky Steadman in 2hrs 58min 37sec. At the Adidas Silverstone Half Marathon, run on the famous racing track, Matt Jones finished in 1hr 39min 28sec and he was followed home by Linda Hawkins in 2hrs 16min 42sec.
In the wheelchair race Richard Chiassaro, in his debut at the distance, finished in an excellent 4th place in 1hr 07min 09sec to beat the HRC Wheelchair record by a fantastic 32 minutes. He was followed home by paralympian Anne Wafula Strike who was second lady in 1hr 20min 57sec which beat her old HRC Ladies Wheelchair record by over 4minutes. Dean Harvey finished in 1hr 25min 54sec to improve his personal best time by 14 minutes.

Harlow Running Club member Jamie Jephcott excelled himself by running the London Ultra 50K (31.1 Miles) race. This run starts at Streatham Common and continues on the Capital Ring trail that circumnavigates the Capital using a network of footpaths, parks and canals and includes some very muddy wooded areas, and then finishes at Wembly Stadium. Jephcott finished in 15th place out of 212 runners in a fantastic 4hrs 27min in what was his first ultra (greater than marathon distance) race.

Several Harlow Running Club members were in action at the Gt Bentley (near Colchester) Half Marathon on a very windy Sunday Morning. First Harlow runner to finish was Jared Bethell in a superb 9th place out of 728 finishers in 1hr 16min 34sec. He was followed home by Steve Murtagh in 13th place in 1hr 18min 03sec which was good enough to win him the Vet 45 trophy. Another trophy winner was John Tennant who finished 1st Vet 60 in 1hr 35min 33sec. First Harlow lady was Dione Jones in a superb 1hr 39min 56sec and she was followed home by Claire Russell in her first Half Mararthon in a commendable 1hr 47min 06sec. Southern Cross Country Championships (Parliament Hill) - 29th January
Harlow Running Club members took part in the Southern Counties Cross Country Championships on Saturday over a 9 mile very muddy and hilly course at Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath, and competed in by some of the best club athletes in Southern England. First Harlow runner to finish was Steve Murtagh in 263rd place out of 885 finishers in a superb 1hr 00min 20sec. He was followed home by Jason Haigh 571st in 1hr 10min 12sec, Rick Ricketts 677th in 1hr 13min 36sec, John Tennant
693rd in 1hr 14min 12sec, Steve Ambrose 694th in 1hr 14min 14sec, Matt Jones 749th in 1hr 17min 15sec, Sean Flynn 778th in 1hr 19min 01sec, Graham Pugh 813th in 1hr 21min 25sec and Alan Cootes 820th in 1hr 22min 21sec.
Folksworth 15 - 23rd January
At the Folksworth 15 Mile race first Harlow finisher was David Croly, also making his debut at this distance, in a superb 1hr 52min 41 sec. He was followed home by fellow debutant's Graham Saville in 2hr 12min 01sec, Vicky Steadman in 2hr 12min 03sec in her first race since becoming a mother just 5 months earlier, and Tony Robinson in 2hr 15min 04sec. Also running were Karen Moir in 2hr 25min 01sec, Linda Selby in 2hr 25min 54sec and Judy Lodge in 2hr 48min 15sec
