Buntingford 10 - 28th December

Some Harlow Running Club members decided to work off the Christmas excesses by running the Buntingford Year End 10 Mile road race. First home for Harlow was Jared Bethell in a superb 58min 24sec, just 5 seconds outside his personal best time for the distance, to finish in 7th place out of over 400 runners. He was followed home by Jamie Luck in 1hr 13min 54sec, Sean Flynn in 1hr 15min 34sec, just 30 seconds outside his PB, Martin McColgan in 1hr 17min 30sec, Susie Morley, in 1hr 45min 43sec and Ron Luck in 1hr 48min 50sec.

Bedford Harriers Half Marathon - 13th December

Several Harlow Running Club members joined over 1500 runners to compete in the Bedford Half Marathon. First Harlow runner to finish and in his first ever half marathon was Jared Bethell who finished in a superb 14th place in a time of 1hr 15min 50sec. He was followed home by David Ayling in a personal best time for the distance of 1hr 29min 16sec. Colin Moody finished as 3rd vet 55 in a time of 1hr 31min 05sec. First Harlow lady was Dionne Jones in a personal best time of 1hr 36min 52sec. She was followed home by Vicky Steadman in 1hr 40min 26sec.

Fairlands Valley Spartans Midweek 5K Series (Race 3/3) - 10th December

Meanwhile at the final Stevenage Midweek 5K Race first home for Harlow was Jason Haigh, incredibly just four days after running the Luton Marathon, in a time of 19min 14sec. He was followed home by John Tennant in 19min 33sec, Sean Fylnn in a personal best time for the distance of 21min 21sec, Sharon Wright 22min 20sec and Julie Allen 25min 36sec in her first race of any distance.

Dionne Jones set a new V40 Club Record in the first and second race in this series in November of 22.04. Another one I missed earlier.

Ferry Building 4M, San Francisco, USA - 6th December

In San Francisco, USA, Vicky Steadman had a fantastic run and finished as second female in the Ferry Building 4 Mile race in 28min 30sec.

Luton Marathon - 6th December

At the Luton Marathon Lee Daniel finished in an excellent 3hrs 23min 33sec in his first ever marathon. He was closely followed home by Jason Haigh in 3hrs 31min 17sec.

St Clare Hospice Santa Run (~4K) - 6th December

Jared Bethell, Susan Dewen, Linda Hawkins, Susie Morley, Wendy Spring, Donna Whitehead and Claire Williams, and  all ran the ~4M course dressed in sanat suits in aid of St Clare Hospice. Although there were no times/positions etc. Jared won!

Essex Veterans Cross Country, Chigwell Row - 5th December

Several Harlow Running Club members took part in the Essex County Vets Cross Country Championships on a very muddy and hilly 5.25 mile course at Chigwell Row. In the mens Vet 40 race first home for Harlow was Rick Ricketts in a creditable 39th place. He was closely followed home by Jamie Jephcott 44th, John Bull 52nd and Matt Jones 58th. In the mens Vet 50 race first home for Harlow was Roy Steven in a superb 22nd place. He was followed home by John Tennant 36th, Sean Flynn 58th and Alan Cootes 68th. In the womens race first home for Harlow was Linda Selby in 58th place. She was followed home by Clare Williams 59th, Alison Bull 68th, Joanne Mills 70th and Susan Dewen 71st.

X-COUNTRY: Sunday 'Run-In' Cross Country League (Race 1 - Harlow) - 29th November

Harlow Running Club hosted the first race in this winters 'Run-In' cross country league, involving local clubs from Bishop's Stortford, Saffron Walden and Ware, in what were very wet and muddy conditions. Harlow men achieved an excellent result in finishing 1st while Harlow Ladies managed 3rd place which left Harlow in a challenging 2nd place overall. First Harlow runner was Jared Bethel finishing in an excellent 2nd place. He was followed home by Justin Revell in 5th place and John Evans in 7th place. First Harlow Lady was Dionne Jones in 9th place closely followed by Katie Herrington in 10th place and Vicky Steadman in 12th place.

Meanwhile at the St. Neots Half Marathon, run in much more conducive conditions, first Harlow runner was Jon Steadman in 107th place out of 900 finishers in 1hr 30min 57sec. He was followed home by Vicky Steadman in 1hr 38min 40sec and Katie Herrington in 1hr 41min 32sec.

Fairlands Valley Spartans Midweek 5K Series (Race 1/3) - 13th November

Harlow Running Club members endured the wind and rain last Thursday to run the first of three Stevenage 5K races. First Harlow runner to finish was John Tennant in a time of 19min 57sec. He was closely followed home by Jason Haigh in 20min 10sec. Sean Flynn, running in his first 5K race, recorded 22min 28sec. First Harlow lady was Dionne Jones in 22min 36min followed by Sharon Wright, in her first race since a maternity break, in 23min 39sec.

Stebbing 10 - 8th November

Several Harlow Running Club members took part in the Stebbing Remembrance Day 10 mile race on Sunday. First Harlow finisher was Jared Bethell in a fantastic 5th place out of 450 runners in a personal best time for the distance of 58min 14sec. He was followed home by the ever improving Adrian Fell in a superb 1hr 06min 26sec which was also a personal best time. First Harlow lady was Dionne Jones in 1hr 13min 50sec, just 15 seconds outside her PB time. Personal best times were also achieved by John Bull 1hr 10min 20sec, Jim Martin 1hr 14min 38sec and Joanne Chung 1hr 28min 18sec.

At the second London Metropolitan League Cross Country race at Woodford, Rick Ricketts led the way for Harlow finishing in 201st place in a time of 32min 56sec. He was followed home by Jamie Jephcott 230th 33min 48sec, David Ayling 295th 36min 19sec, Graham Pugh 298th 36min 29sec, Matt Jones 316th 38min 04sec and Martin McColgan 326th 38min 47sec.

Stevenage Half Marathon - 1st November

Several Harlow Running Club members braved the wind and rain to run the Stevenage Half Marathon in what were really atrocious conditions for running. Despite this three Harlow ladies combined to produce the performance of the day and win the ladies team prize. First Harlow lady to finish was Dionne Jones in a personal best time for the distance in a superb 1hr 39min 09sec. She was followed home by Katie Herrington in 1hr 40min 54sec and Vicky Steadman in 1hr 43min 09sec.
Harlow's first runner to finish was Rick Ricketts in a creditable 1hr 31min 59sec. He was followed home by John Tennant in 1hr 33min 35sec and Jon Steadman in 1hr 35min 30sec.
Many thanks to Susan Dewen for turning up to support on what was a very windy rainy day.  Wasn't it ironic how it all cleared up on the drive home...?

Great South Run - 25th October

Two Harlow Running Club members joined 14,000 runners in the Bupa Great South 10 mile Run, which was won by Britain's greatest distance runner of recent years Mo Farah. First home for Harlow was Jamie Jephcott in 67min 54sec, less than 30 seconds outside his personal best time and incredibly just a week after running the Abingdon Marathon. He was followed home by David Croly in a personal best time for the distance of 72min 02sec.

Harlow Running Club member Jamie Jephcott completed the Abingdon Marathon in a superb 3hrs 26min 40sec to smash his personal best time for the distance by almost 50 mins.

At the first London Met League Cross Country Race of the winter, run at Ruislip, first home for Harlow was Rick Ricketts in 195th place in a time of 35min 29sec. aAt the Manuden 10K race fast improving Adrian Fell ran a superb 41min 15sec to record a personal best time for the distance and finish in 11th place out of 212. Two Harlow Running Club members ran the Loch Ness Marathon and both produced monster performances by running personal best times for the distance. First home for Harlow in 30th place out of 2173 was Alan Wise in a magnificent 2hrs 55min 27sec to improve his PB by 12 min. He was followed home by David Ayling in 236th place in 3hrs 24min 26sec to improve his PB by 2 min.

Run to the Beat Half Marathon - 27th September

Five Harlow Running Club ladies joined over 9,000 other runners in the Sony Ericsson Run to the Beat Half Marathon at London's O2 Arena. This is an event that combines music with sport by providing 11 live band around the 13.1 mile course to encourage the runners to perform to their best abilities. This proved to be the case for three of the Harlow runners who achieving personal best times for the distance. First Harlow runner to finish was by Joanne Chung in 2hr 04min 12sec, Wendy Spring 2hr 08min 17sec(PB), Linda Hawkins 2hrs 21min 53sec (PB) and Susan Dewen 2hr 21min 53sec.

A (surprisingly) flat course through the town of Elne, out into the countryside and back.   The race finished in an athletics stadium half way round the track.  Annoyingly, the 10K mark was at the entrance so an extra 300 hundred metres was added thus robbing Joanne of what would have been a PB.

Real Berlin Marathon - 20th September

In the Berlin Marathon first Harlow runner to finish was Katie Herrington in a fantastic 3hrs 40min 24sec, in what was her first marathon and coming only 7 days after running a personal best time in a half marathon, a truly stunning effort. Grahame Thomas was not far back in 3hrs 41min 51sec. Dionne Jones also had a superb run and finished in 3hrs 43min 48sec in what was a personal best time by over 10 minutes. Finally Andy Terrell finished in 4hrs 02min 32sec.

At the Ronde Ceretanne 20K run in the French Pyrenees Clare Williams finished in 1hr 53min 26sec and Wendy Spring in 2hrs 08min 13sec.
In the 6K event Peter Mills finished in 33min 44sec and wife Joanne Mills finished second lady vet 60 in 34min 02sec. There were blue skies, warm sun, spectacular scenery, cheering crowds, brass bands, brilliant atmosphere, wine and sausages at the feeding stations!

At the Grunty Fen Half Marathon in Ely first Harlow runner to finish was Adrian Fell in a superb 1hr 33min 29sec in what was his first run at the distance. Katie Herrington also had a great run and improved her personal best time by over six minutes to finish in 1hr 39min 49sec, Grahame Thomas also finished in the same time.

Garden City 10 - 6th September

Several Harlow Running Club members ran the Welwyn Garden City 10 mile road race. First Harlow runner home was Jared Bethel in a superb 8th place out of  over 400 runners in a personal best time for the distance of 58min 19sec. He was followed home by John Tennant in 1hr 04min 30sec and a much improved Adrian Fell in a personal best time of 1.08.25. The first three Harlow ladies battled it out over all 10 miles and all finished within 15 seconds of each other and all with personal best times. First was Dionne Jones in 1.13.35, followed by Katie Herrington in 1.13.39 and then Vicky Steadman in 1.13.50. They were rewarded for their efforts by being the 3rd Ladies team, the men were 5th. Personal best times were also recorded by Jon Steadman, Jim Martin and Wendy Spring.

Meanwhile at the Adidas Women's 5K Challenge in Hyde Park, amongst 18,000 runners, Caroline Bore finished in 26min 26sec and Wendy Stevens in 28.53, which is a new Harlow Running Club Ladies Vet 65 record.

Harlow 10 - 26th July

Harlow Running Club staged the 20th anniversary of the Harlow 10 Mile Road Race. Among the 460 finishers were runners from Essex, Herts, Kent, North London and as far away as Ely and Portsmouth. The race was won by John Clarke of Newham and Essex Beagles in a time of 54min 25sec. He was followed home by Paul Molyneux of Springfield Striders in 55.25 and Allen Smalls of Colchester Harriers in 58.07. First lady finisher and 9th overall was Jennie Roberts of Colchester Harriers in a time of 61min 02sec.Also participating were six members of the local Territorial Army in support of the Help For Heroes charity who marched round the course wearing full army packs.
First Harlow runner to finish was Jared Bethel in 11th place in a time of 61.30. He was followed home by Justin Revell in a personal best time of 62.13 and Alan Broughton in 64.24. Andy Terrell also finished in a personal best time for the distance in 67.58.

Crystal Palace Grand Prix - 25th July

Harlow Running Club wheelchair athlete Richard Charriso participated in the non elite section of the London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace. Richard competed in both the 100 and 400 meter races and in a fantastic performance won both races and collected gold medals for each race.

Midweek League Race 4 (Welwyn) - 1st July

Harlow Running Club completed the final race in the Sweatshop Midweek Road Race League over a 5 mile course at Welwyn Garden City. First Harlow runner was Jared Bethell in 11th place in a time of 29min 19sec. He was closely followed home by Justin Revell in 12th place in a personal best time of 29.30 and Sven Meinen in 13th place in 29.46. Roy Steven and John Tennant finished the race in 1st and 2nd vet 50 positions. First Harlow lady and first vet 35 was Dionne Jones in 5th place in a personal best time of 36min 15sec. She was followed home by Vicky Steadman in 8th place in 36.48 and Katie Herrington in 14th place in a personal best time of 38.18.  There were also personal best times for the distance for Jamie Jephcott, Andy Terrell, Jon Steadman, David Croly, Joanne Mills and Wendy Spring. Harlow men finished the race in 2nd place out of 7 teams and 3rd vets team, Harlow ladies finished in 4th place. Overall Harlow finished the race in 2nd place. The final league position show Harlow men in 2nd place and 3rd vets team, Harlow ladies finished in 4th place. The combined overall league position shows Harlow in 3rd place. Individually Roy Steven finished the series as 1st vet 50 and John Tennant 2nd vet 50, Dionne Jones was 1st vet 35 lady and Linda Selby 3rd vet 55 lady.

At the Bishop's Stortford 10 mile race first Harlow runner was Jared Bethel in 5th place out of 200 in a time of 1hr 4min 26sec. MIDWEEK LEAGUE HARLOW 10K 17th JUNE 2009

Harlow Running Club hosted the third race of the Sweatshop Midweek Road Race League over a 10k course and made home territory count. The mens team put in a fantastic performance to finish in first place out of seven teams. First Harlow runner was ex paralympian Noel Thatcher in 2nd place in a time of 34min 32sec just 14sec behind the winner. He was closely followed by Jared Bethell and Justin Revell in 6th and 7th places respectively. John Tennant and Roy Steven were 1st and 2nd vet 50 finishers helping Harlow Vets team to 3rd place.
The ladies team also ran well with 3rd place and only missed out on 2nd place by the narrowest of margins. Harlow's top lady was Dionne Jones who finished in a superb 2nd place and 1st vet 35 in a time of 43min 16sec. She was followed home by Vicky Steadman in 8th place and Bel Waters in 13th place.
There were personal best times for Jamie Jephcott, Adrian Fell, Dougie Gray, Roger Forlan, Dionne Jones and Joanne Chung.

Harlow Championship: Tilty Hilly 5 - 7th June

Thirteen Harlow Running Club members ran the Hilly Tilty 5 mile race in really atrocious conditions. As the name suggests the race is a very hilly course around the Essex village of Tilty and run during a torrential downpour. First Harlow runner home was Steve Mackenzie in 19th palce in 31min 14sec closely followed by Roy Steven in 20th place in 31.31 and John Tennant in 27th place in 32.18. These three secured third place MENS TEAM for Harlow. Despite the course and conditions there were personal best times for David Ayling, Jamie Jephcott, Jon Steadman, John Bull and Susan Dewen.

Sweatshop Midweek League: Race 2 (Royston) - 4th June

Harlow Running Club fielded a total of 44 runners in the second race of the Sweatshop Herts/Essex Midweek Road Race League run over a 10K course at Royston. Both men and ladies teams finished in 3rd place out of 7 teams and overall Harlow finished in 3rd place, the  vet men also finished 3rd vet team.
First Harlow runner was Jared Bethel in 8th place out of 250 runners in a personal best time of 35min 49sec. Roy Steven and John Tennant finished 1st and 3rd vet 50 respectively. Dionne Jones was 1st Harlow lady in 3rd place and 1st vet 35 finisher and Linda Selby was 3rd vet 55. There were also personal best times for Sven Meinen, David Ayling, Andy Terrell, Jon Steadman, Jamie Jephcott, John Bull, Adrian Fell, Dougie Gray, Sean Flynn, Dionne Jones, Claire Williams, Linda Hawkins, Lisa Hacker, Denise Goodchild, Janet Webster, Karen Shepherd and Jan Bliss.

Harlow Ladies 5K Series Race 3 - 2nd June

Harlow Running Club hosted the final race in the Ladies Harlow 5K series. Once again the winner of the race and of the series was Lauren Macgregor from Orion Harriers of Chingford in 19min 29sec. Second was Mandy Livingstone from Welwlyn Garden City Runners in 20.36 and third Jay Andrews from Orion Harriers in 20.49. First team and winning team of the series was Orion Harriers. First Harlow runner in 8th place and second vet 35 was Dionne Jones in 21.44. Not far behind were Katie Herrington and Vicky Steadman in 16th and 17th place respectively. Cork City Marathon - 1st June

Harlow Running Club member Steve Ambrose completed the Cork City Marathon in 4hrs 00min 30sec just 7 seconds outside his personal best. This was a very creditable achievement considering the undulating course and the warm conditions.

Hatfield Broad Oak 10K - 25th May

Harlow Running Club fielded 40 runners in the 1100 strong Hatfield Broad Oak 10K race on Bank Holiday Monday. First Harlow Runner to finish was Justin Revell in 27th place in a time of 36mins 36sec. He was followed home by Alan Broughton in 49th place in 38.03. Third Harlow runner was junior member Julian Tamplin in 53rd place and a new Club U20 record of 38.11. At the other end of the scale 81 year old Harry Woodward finished in a fantastic 68.21 to create a new Vet 80 club record. There was also a personal best time for John Bull.
First Harlow lady to finish was Dionne Jones in a personal best time of 43.28. She was followed home by Katie Herrington, also in a personal best time of 46.45. Fourth Harlow lady was Linda Selby in a new club vet 60 record of 52.40. There were also personal best times for Joanne Chung, Susan Dewen, Kim Wookey and Debbie Coombs.

Harlow Running Club's second Ladies Harlow 5K Series race was once again won by Lauren Macgregor from Orion Running Club in a time of 19mins 22sec. Harlow Running Club fielded a team of 46 runners in the first race of this years Sweatshop Midweek 10K Road Race League held at Bishop's Stortford. Both men and womens teams came 4th out of seven teams and 4th overall.
First Harlow man to finish was Justin Ravell, just two weeks after running the London Marathon, in 13th position in a time of 36min 56sec. Then grouped together were Steve Mackenzie in 26th position in a time of 39.02, John Tennant in 27th position and first vet 50 runner in a time of 39.04 and Roy Steven in 28th position and 2nd vet 50 runner in a time of 39.06.
First Harlow woman to finish was Dionne Jones in 5th position and 1st vet 35 runner in a time of 44.29. Not far behind was Katie Herrington in 7th position in a time of 45.45.

Last Wednesday saw the running of the first race of three in the Ladies Harlow 5K Series which is run through the town park. First runner home was Lauren Macgregor of Orion Running Club from Chingford in a time of 20 min 05sec. She was followed home by team mate Jay Andrews in 20.20 and Rebecca White from Saffron Striders in 21.07.

Flora London Marathon - 26th April

Several Harlow Running Club members ran the Flora London Marathon on a very warm day which was ideal for supporters but very energy sapping for those running 26 miles. As a result no Harlow runner achieved a personal best time. However, there were club veteran records for two of the clubs more experienced female runners. Linda Selby smashed the ladies Vet 60 record by more than 35 minutes with a time of 4hrs 24 mins 37sec. St Clare Hospice 10K - 5th April ¦ Route

The St Clare Hospice 10K was the most popular race with a total of 44 runners participating. First Harlow runner home was Gold Medal Paralympian Noel Thatcher who finished 3rd overall and was the first veteran finisher in a time of 34.29. Not far behind in a personal best time of 35.03 was Justin Revell who was fifth overall. Roy Steven finished 1st Vet 50 in a time of 38.34. There were personal best times for Andy Terrell, David Ayling, Jon Steadman, Thomas Croly, Steve Ambrose, John Bull and
Katie Herrington.

Oakley 20 - 5th April

At the Oakley 20 Mile race at Bedford Alan Wise was first Harlow runner home in 2hrs 18mins 37sec. Linda Selby finished as 2nd Vet 60 lady and created a new club Vet 60 record in a time of 3hrs 19min 38sec.

Four Harlow Running Club members joined 12 thousand other runners in the Reading Half Marathon. Once again husband and wife Jon and Vicky Steadman led the way and there were personal best times for Jon Steadman and Katie Herrington.

Harlow Running Club member Graham Pugh took part in the Orion 15 mile cross country race which runs through Epping Forest and contains many hilly sections. Graham did well therefore to finish in a very creditable 2hrs 12min 16sec.

Four Harlow Running Club members took part in the National Cross Country Championships, held over a very muddy 7 mile course at Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath.

MET LEAGUE: Perrivale Cross Country - 14th February

Only 3 of us made the final Met league cross country fixture at Perivale today. This course is slightly longer than the others at just over 5 and a half miles. The sun came out during the race, but there was a lot of heavy mud to get through, although we've all known worse.

Harlow finished the season 9th out of 22 teams in division 2.

Great Bentley Half Marathon – 8th February ¦ Route (Club Championship Half Marathon)

Several Harlow Running Club members braved the snow and ice to run in the Essex Half Marathon Championships at Great Bentley. Pride of place went to Linda Selby who finished as the first Vet 60 lady and picked up an Essex Championship gold medal for her category. Linda also created a new Harlow Running Club Vet 60 ladies record with a time of 1hr 54min 30sec. Four other Harlow runners ran personal best times.

Benfleet 15 (Sunday 25th)

Three Harlow Running Club members took part in the Benfleet 15 mile race along with 500 other runners.
First home for Harlow was Alan Broughton who finished in a time of 1hr 41min 49sec for 11th place. He was followed home by Steve Mackenzie in 1.48.37 for 34th place and Roy Steven 1.49.13 for 37th place.

Southern Cross Country  - Hillingdon (Saturday 24th)

Several members of Harlow Running Club took part in the South of England Cross Country Championships at a very muddy Hillingdon.

Junior member Julian Tamplin competed in the U17 mens 6k race and finished in a creditable 121st place in a time of 24.52 mins.

Katie Herrington was the sole female entry and completed the 8k course in a time of 47.01 mins for 247th place.
In the senior mens race, run over 15k, Sven Meinen was the first Harlow runner to finish in a time of 1hr 11min 48sec for 386th place out of 670 runners.
